UK Retail Post-COVID and Charity Shops of our retail landscape

There are still three hugely important ‘unknowns’ which I believe hold the key to the future health and recovery of the UK retail sector ‘post-COVID’

The first should become clearer from mid-April, when ‘non-essential ‘stores can reopen (in England) and shoppers are then able to freely return to their local High Streets, town and city centres.

But although the COVID rules say these stores can start to trade again, will they all choose to do so? And just because all these ‘non-essential’ retailers can open, will shoppers choose to return to physical stores?

According to data from LDC, an interesting precedent from last year (when the first COVID lockdown ended in early June) was that 20% of ‘non-essential’ retailers still hadn’t reopened by the end of September/early October 20201 when England then entered regional tiered lockdowns.

However, longer term I am convinced most people will eventually return to shop in stores because they crave that human connection. This social aspect of shopping (whether the marketplace or the meeting place) cannot be underestimated as it’s been central to our town and city centres since Greek and Roman times.

However, in the short term I just don’t think most shoppers will be rushing out in huge numbers next week to travel on public transport to their town and city centres. I may be wrong and there will be queues outside Primark, but it will take several weeks before a realistic pattern of ‘post lockdown’ footfall is established.

The second unknown is over a slightly longer period and focuses on whether the millions of ‘commuting office workers’ across the UK either choose to return to their pre-COVID office locations — or indeed are required to do so by their employers.

However, I believe that after a full year for so many people of ‘WFH’ because of COVID, the UK working landscape has changed forever. Already some major employers (including for example Nationwide, BP, RBS, and IBM) are signaling to employees that going back to a full five days a week in the office won’t happen and some form of blended or mixed home and office-based work is the future.

This is supported by a recent study from the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) found 32 per cent of office-based staff are expecting to partially work from home even after lockdown ends.

This has huge implications for retail, particularity in London and all the major regional cities including Nottingham and has already caused havoc for city centre retail even when retailers can reopen and trade — not least for those located at the major commuter transport hubs.

The retail beneficiaries of continued WFH are of course the more local, suburban shopping streets and in particular those independent retailers who often occupy these locations. This has been driven not just by working from home but also but linked to an increasing sense of both place and community by many shoppers.

What shoppers now want is an offering that reflect the uniqueness of the place, the local communities, local products too. Innovative and imaginative community-focused spaces, with Independent retailers offering products that have provenance and linked to local heritage and culture.

A recent Enterprise Nation poll indicated that one in three shoppers planned to spend more at local independent stores and that rose to half of those aged under 35.

Given working from home is going to continue for many I believe this this change in shopping habit is likely to be long term and probably permanent.

The third unknown is whether the uncertainty and anxiety of the past year will continue even as things such as the opening of ‘non-essential’ retail start to move back to ‘normal’. Consumer confidence is key to the future health of retail and I’m just not sure that this is clear at present.

Many households have clearly accrued savings over the past year because of cancelled holidays, meals out, entertainment gyms and other discretionary expenditure (the OBR estimate this could be as high as £180bn) and as a result there have been predictions of a post-Covid ‘spending boom’ (or a 21st Century equivalent of the ‘roaring twenties’)

However, there are also understandable fears about an unequal ‘bounce back’ because lots of consumers financial position has weakened over this same period because of unemployment and for many others, their future job security had reduced with possible unemployment in the second half of 2021 when the various Government furlough and business support schemes will inevitably end.

Charity Shops — an established and valuable part of our retail landscape.

There are an estimated 11,000 -12,000 Charity shops located across the UK according to the Charity Retail Association. They play a hugely important part in many of our High Streets but for several years have received widespread criticism as somehow ‘taking over’ our local High Streets and as a result damaging the shopping appeal and vibrancy of these shopping areas.

The reality is quite different. Charity shops account for only around 5% of all retail outlets in the UK — and according to the latest data from LDC over 350 closed for good in 2020. So, the impression that charity shops are expanding hugely in numbers and swamping local retail locations is clearly not true.

However, I believe this impression may have been created because most charity shops are located in local High Streets and residential areas — only 5% are in shopping centres or retail parks.

Because charity shops also need to be located close to residential areas and have nearby parking facilities (so helping members of the public bring donated clothes and other household goods) it’s also not unusual to have two or three charity shops grouped together in adjacent retail units.

This all just means they are more visible to many of us daily and so perhaps leading to this widespread misunderstanding that Charity shops account for many more than just 1 in 20 retail outlets!

It’s also interesting that the largest ten national charities (Oxfam, Barnardo’s, THF, Cancer Research UK, Age UK etc.) together account for just 37% of all charity shops, and so the vast majority are smaller and less well-known charities which are often closely linked to local communities and operate without the infrastructure and full-time paid employees of some of the major charities.

In total, charity shops provide a total of almost £400m income for charities every year but rely on local public donated clothes and other household goods for 90% of this total.

Over the past year and since the first COVID-19 lockdown, almost all the 166,00 registered charities and voluntary organisations across the UK, and not just those with shops, have been hit by several unpredicted challenges.

This has involved not only the cancellation of almost all their regular fund-raising activities such as street or door-to-door collections, as well as a range of charity sponsored sporting events, ranging from marathons runs to parachute jumps, but the enforced closure (as ‘non-essential’ retailers) of all their shops.

Charity shops across the UK rely on an army of over 230,000 volunteers to keep operating, but because many are retired and so older, they have not all been able to continue because of shielding or other health concerns related to COVID-19.

This slump in charity shop income has happened at the same time as services provided by many charities have been in greatest demand. With unemployment rising above 5%, over 700,000 jobs lost since COVID-19 began last year and with 5 million employees still supported by Government furlough schemes which will inevitably have to be wound down this year.

According to the Resolution Foundation, the poorest 20% of UK households have seen their savings deteriorate over the past 12 months and in a recent survey conducted by Pro Bono Economics 72% of those charities which responded said they expect to see an increase in demand for their services over the next sis months, compared to pre-COVID expectations.

Meanwhile many of us have taken the opportunity to clear out wardrobes and cupboards at home during lockdown and so there are huge volumes of clothing and household goods just waiting to be taken to local charity shops once lockdown eases.

However, COVID-19 rules mean donated goods now need to be ‘quarantined’ for at least 48 hours before being checked, sorted, and displayed for sale which will present yet another logistical and operational challenge for the volunteers involved, often working is relatively small retail units with limited storage space.

So, the reopening of many charity shops next week is very welcome, but still not without challenges for a sector which, as a friend recently reminded me, plays such an important role at both ends of the value chain (‘people want to donate, and people want to buy’) and so is an established and valuable part of our retail landscape.

Think about Digital Campaings and upper management

Campaigns go stale fast. Here are some ideas to keep content fresh

By JENNIFER ROOK

Oscar Wilde once said that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If only he knew how the word, “impression” would take on a whole new meaning many years later.

These days, the common marketing practice known as the “Rule of 7,” meaning that a potential customer needs to see a message at least 7 times before it leaves an impression and inspires action. Some would argue that number is now roughly 11 times or even double that.

“If you think about all of the digital campaigns, otherwise known as content, running out there following this benchmark, the vast amount of information slamming consumers is overwhelming,” says Katie Saglimbene, president of Lansing-based . “Yes, there is a lot of noise and that’s not going to change. But if you focus your efforts and resist the urge to try and reach everyone, you can attract quality customers.”

There are thousands upon thousands of articles published daily about how to find the right combination of content. Humans are fickle, points out Saglimbene. What worked one day may fall flat the next. So, how do you know if what you have out there is working? And if something isn’t, how do you know when to make a change?

Saglimbene offers five tips to keep in mind when evaluating the effectiveness of your digital campaign.

1. Keep the tone of your campaigns consistent with your brand voice

Saglimbene says this step is often overlooked for the sake of getting an appealing offer in front of a potential customer. However, if your message and brand voice do not align, the message goes stale very quickly.

“Your brand voice must reflect your core values as a business,” said Saglimbene. “Think of your brand as a person, with unique traits, characteristics, and sense of style. If you try to mirror someone else’s brand voice, it won’t sound authentic. This will cause your message to fall flat with potential customers.”

Once you determine your brand voice and align it with your products and services, stay committed. Many businesses believe that they must alter their voice to attract customers, when actually the opposite is true.

“You can’t be everything to everyone, so don’t,” said Saglimbene. “Customers that like your particular brand persona, product offering, and services will be attracted to you. This is what you want because these customers will be the most loyal and your greatest fans.”

2. Map out your customer’s path to your business

This builds upon the first point. In thinking about your brand voice in the form of a person, Saglimbene advises thinking about how your brand person greets potential customers and how that person presents themselves.

“Envision your brand persona meeting a potential customer seven times during their journey to do business with you,” said Saglimbene. “Map out how this person first says ‘hello.’ Think about what you want to communicate, how you want to say it, and how you want it delivered.”

For example, say you owned XYZ landscape and you identified your brand persona to be to-the-point, easy-going, and female. Your first initial “impression” may be in the form of an article entitled, “Five Easy Plants that Add Color to a Window Box Fast.” You can target young females and do a paid content piece on Facebook with an Instagram story mix. You can also create quick video montages and TikTok stories. You can also target three or four female influencers and run paid content on top gardening blogs/vlogs.

Have a lot of content already? This leads to the next point.

3. Squeeze as much MILEAGE out of one piece of content

Many businesses believe that they have to turn into original content machines, forever trying to come up with the next big idea just to stand out.

“Yes, originality is always favored, yet sometimes originality comes in the form of repurposing what you’ve already created,” said Saglimbene. “Taking this approach enables you to present your ideas in different ways, drives your message home, and keeps you committed to your brand voice.”

Have a six-page white paper? Think about creating an abstract to go along with it or break it up into six smaller articles that link to the white paper. Create a series of Twitter posts or a brief how-to video.

Saglimbene suggest taking different pieces of content and testing to see what appeals to your audience.

“Nowadays, there is room for experimentation,” said Saglimbene. “You can try out different messages for little to no cost and track what lands with potential customers.”

If you’ve exhausted every angle, refresh the piece, add a new call-to-action and roll it back out.

“Sharing a ‘new and improved’ version of your content will not work against you,” said Saglimbene. “Consumer package goods companies do it all of the time.”

4. Don’t overcommit to one medium

This harkens back to the first point. This was a common best practice for a long time — committing to one medium like Facebook or Instagram and putting a lot of effort to develop a presence. Many believed that if you build it, they will come.

“You should always evaluate if your audience still values the medium as much as you do,” said Saglimbene. “Poll your shoppers. Watch how many open your emails. Track comments on Facebook. If you start tracking, you can start to identify patterns. If you want to try something new, say a podcast, let your customers know.”

Saglimbene advises giving new mediums or new campaigns at least three months for a message to take hold. The latest research states that advertisers should give new mediums at least six months.

“Give a new medium a chance to work and determine how you are going to evaluate if it’s working or not before you start,” said Saglimbene. “Yes, generating sales is the end goal but also determine what else is important, like word-of-mouth promotions or establishing a good dialogue with customers.”

5. Close your feedback loop

This is an important point to drive home because it’s tempting for business owners to launch a number of digital promotions hoping to catch as many fish as possible. Saglimbene warns that doing this gets costly fast and may not be an effective strategy in the long term.

“As you plan a campaign always remember to close your feedback loop,” said Saglimbene. “This comes in the form of a ‘call-to-action.’ What do you want the customer to do once they see your message? If you leave it open-ended, chances are that nothing will come of it.”

Saglimbene says that not all content needs to end with a “buy now” link. Depending on the medium or the purpose of the content, sometimes this means providing a form fill or a link to more information.

“Determine what you want to accomplish with your content, examine the touch points, and identify the actions you want customers to take at each touch point,” said Saglimbene. “Implement one or two digital campaigns and examine what happens along the way. Monitoring a customer’s journey from beginning to end will really help you in understanding what modifications you need to make along the way. This is the key to keeping campaigns from going stale.”

Upper management won’t allow coworkers to talk while on lunch, apparently.

This is so stupid, but it’s actually happening and I need to vent about it.

I’m going to start this off by saying that I’m getting out of this environment soon. I’m lining something up with a different employer so I can put in my two weeks on Monday. I work in an independent grocery store and the owner is a prick.

We do not have a dedicated employee break room at my job. There is a “conference room,” that we use as an unofficial break room, but the employees are expected to vacate at any moment to accommodate any work that upper management or the owner may need to conduct in there. We don’t generally take lunch there because we can get kicked out at any moment for any reason.

There is seating used as a dining area for customers, but the owner does not like employees sitting there because it takes up seating for customers.

My job is also next to a really sleazy dive bar, so it’s understood that it generally isn’t safe to take breaks outside the building. Many of the female employees, such as myself, are regularly stalked and sexually harassed by drunk bar patrons, who are also regulars at my job.

Some employees take breaks inside their cars. Not everyone has a car, though, and this option is not available to me because my car’s AC is broken and it’s getting too hot to sit in the car.

So, many of us take our lunches in the back hallway where we keep back stock. If more than one of us is sitting there on our lunch, we will talk to one another. The owner and upper management has walked past us on more than one occasion and asked us if we were all on break. We truthfully responded that we were.

Recently, though, when they ask if we’re on break and we respond “yes,” upper management will warn us that we need to stop taking lunch and talking back there because the owner hates it when we do that. They’re under the impression that we’re talking instead working, but again… we’re literally off the clock when we do this and we’re only back there because we don’t have anywhere else to go.

It doesn’t help that they’re speaking this way to the most productive and successful employees. Even if we were on the clock, my coworker still gets all his work done in a timely manner and I’ve been so successful in sales within my department that I am singlehandedly responsible for increasing profit by 800% and I’m only getting paid minimum wage to do it. My coworkers are the only enjoyable aspect of this job anymore. I’d get it if we were slacking, but this just isn’t the case.

This place has a whole mess of other problems, but we’re all generally feeling on-edge and angry about upper management reprimanding us for this behavior because we’re all overworked, underpaid, and feel like our boss doesn’t take into account that we’re human beings. The turnover rate is crazy high right now, much higher than average for the industry. I’ve been there for two years and there is only one other person that has been there longer than I have. New employees only last a few months.

I can’t wait to leave this awful place behind.
